Spirituality

"Not all of us believe in God or a higher power" (Pathways), but spirituality is not the same as religion.  On the other hand, most of us do hold important values that can help guide our recovery journey. (Pathways)

Some accepted definitions of spirituality (Pathways) are:

  • pertaining to or consisting of spirit
  • sacred
  • of the spirit: life giving principle within a living being; soul
  • real sense or significance of something

One benefit of spirituality is a source of important beliefs and values.  These values include humility, love, respect for all creation, self-respect, forgiveness, non-violence and ethics (or a code of conduct) (Pathways).  Another benefit of spirituality is that for many it provides a source of comfort and healing.  "Many of us find spiritual practices help us understand and accept the suffering we have experienced, and helps us feel better about ourselves, find solace or comfort, or feel close to sources of spiritual support."

Some phrases that show this innate spirituality that is not dependent on religion (Pathways) are:

  • at one with nature
  • in God's hands
  • in touch with my higher power
  • in the flow
  • at peace with in myself

There are activities that may help to hone one's sense of inner peace.  Some of these (Pathways) are:

  • reading uplifting writings
  • prayer
  • contemplation
  • meditation
  • releasing problems to a higher power

A friend recently gave me a copy of a book that I found helpful on my own spiritual journey.  The book is titles "Chazown", and was written by Craig Groeschel.  The book details the author's belief that God has an intended personal vision for each person, and provides his recommendations for determining one's personal vision.
